Honest Comparison

White Cotton vs Other Portugal Manufacturers

Choosing a clothing manufacturer is one of the most important decisions your brand will make. We are biased — we ARE one of the options — but we believe in transparency. Here is how White Cotton compares to other Portuguese manufacturers, and to Asian manufacturing, honestly.

This page was written by the people who run White Cotton. We have tried to be as fair as possible, including sections on where we are not the best fit. If you find anything inaccurate, tell us and we will correct it.

Our Strengths

Where White Cotton Excels

Heavyweight Expertise

We work with fabrics up to 1,100 GSM — heavy french terry, oversized fleece, thick sherpa. Most Portuguese factories max out around 500 GSM because their cutting and sewing equipment is not set up for heavyweight materials. If your brand is built on substantial, premium-weight garments, this is where we have a genuine edge.

Low Minimum Order Quantity

Our MOQ is 100 units in a single colourway, or 75 per colourway when you order two or more — 150 and 100 respectively for t-shirts and other lightweight jersey. Most Portuguese factories that publish a minimum sit between 100 and 500 units, and many publish none at all; Asian factories typically start at 500–1,000. This makes us a strong option for new brands testing their first collection, or established brands launching limited drops.

Speed

We return quotations quickly. Fast sample turnaround. Full production runs 4–6 weeks. This is faster than most competitors because we keep popular fabric stocks in-house and our team handles everything from pattern making to shipping under one roof.

Factory-Direct

You deal directly with the people who cut and sew your garments. No agents, no middlemen, no markup on top of the factory price. This means clearer communication, faster problem-solving, and lower cost. When you email us, you are emailing the factory — not a sales office in another country.

Honest Limitations

Where We Might Not Be the Best Fit

No factory is perfect for every project. Here is where other manufacturers may serve you better than we can.

Formal Tailoring

If you need blazers, suits, structured dresses, or formal evening wear, we are not the right factory. We specialise in casualwear and streetwear — hoodies, t-shirts, sweatshirts, outerwear, and pants. Formal tailoring requires different equipment and expertise.

Very High Volume Orders

If you consistently need 10,000+ units per order, an Asian manufacturer will likely offer better unit economics. We are optimised for runs of 75–2,000 units per colourway. We can handle larger orders, but factories in Bangladesh, China, or Turkey are built for that scale.

Lowest Possible Price

If your only criterion is the cheapest price per unit regardless of other factors, Asian manufacturing will beat us every time at volume. Our pricing reflects European labour standards, certified materials, and proximity to EU markets. You get what you pay for — but if budget is the single deciding factor, we may not be competitive.

Technical Performance Fabrics

If you need activewear, moisture-wicking sportswear, or garments made from technical synthetic fabrics, we are not the best fit. We work primarily with natural fibres — cotton, organic cotton, french terry, fleece, corduroy, denim. For performance textiles, look for factories that specialise in activewear.

Due Diligence

Questions to Ask Any Manufacturer

Whether you choose us or someone else, these questions will help you evaluate any clothing manufacturer. We answer all of them for our own clients — your manufacturer should too.

01

What is your actual MOQ?

Not the quoted MOQ on the website — the real minimum they will accept. Many factories quote 100 units but will not start production for less than 300.

02

Can I visit the factory?

If a manufacturer will not let you visit the production floor, ask why. Reputable factories welcome visits from production clients.

03

Do you own the factory or are you an agent?

Agents add a margin of 15–30% and act as a middleman. There is nothing wrong with using an agent, but you should know whether you are paying factory-direct prices or agent prices.

04

What certifications do you hold?

Ask for documentation — not just claims. OEKO-TEX, GOTS, and BCI certificates have expiry dates and can be verified online.

05

What is your defect rate?

Every factory has defects. A factory that claims zero defects is not being honest. Industry standard is 2–3%. What matters is how they handle defects — do they replace, refund, or ignore?

06

Can I speak to existing clients?

References from real brands who have completed at least one full production run tell you more than any sales pitch.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

Are you biased in this comparison?

Yes, completely. We are one of the options being compared, and we wrote this page. That is why we have been transparent about where we do not excel — formal tailoring, very high volumes, lowest-price-wins scenarios, and technical performance fabrics. We believe honesty builds more trust than a sales pitch, and we would rather you choose the right factory for your project than choose us for the wrong reasons.

Can I compare you to a specific factory?

Submit a quote request with your project details, and we will provide a detailed quotation you can compare directly against any other manufacturer. We will explain how we differ for your specific garment type, quantity, and requirements — not in generalities.

What if my order is too large for you?

We comfortably handle orders up to 2,000+ units per style. For significantly larger volumes, we will be upfront about whether we can meet your timeline and whether you might get better pricing elsewhere. We would rather tell you the truth than take an order we cannot deliver well.

What if I need something you do not make?

We will recommend another factory. Seriously. We have relationships across Portugal's textile cluster and can point you toward factories that specialise in whatever you need — whether that is formal tailoring, activewear, or denim. We would rather help you find the right fit than lose your trust by attempting something outside our expertise.

How do I know your claims are accurate?

Ask for proof. We can provide OEKO-TEX certification documents, client references, sample garments, and a factory visit once you reach the production stage. Every claim on this page is verifiable — if something does not check out, we want to know.
