Textile Factory in Barcelos, Portugal

Manufacturing from the heart of Portugal's textile capital — where 300+ companies form Europe's densest garment production cluster.

Overview

White Cotton operates a garment manufacturing facility in Barcelos, the historical capital of Portuguese textiles. Located at Rua Industrial do Corujo 10, Lijó, our factory sits within a 30km radius of over 300 textile companies — fabric mills, dyehouses, embroidery specialists, and trim suppliers. This concentration of expertise enables vertically integrated production with rapid turnarounds and exceptional quality control.

01

Barcelos — Portugal's Textile Capital

Barcelos has been the centre of Portuguese textile manufacturing for over a century. The municipality and surrounding Cávado district concentrate more textile and garment companies per square kilometre than anywhere else in Western Europe. This isn't coincidence — it's the result of generations of accumulated expertise, a skilled workforce trained from adolescence in textile crafts, and a complete supply chain ecosystem that makes Barcelos the natural home for garment manufacturing in Portugal.

02

A Complete Supply Chain Within 30km

The Barcelos textile cluster is vertically integrated in a way that few manufacturing regions can match. Within a 30-kilometre radius of our factory, you'll find cotton spinners, knitting mills producing jersey, French terry, fleece, and rib fabrics, dyehouses offering reactive and disperse dyeing, finishing plants for brushing, garment washing, and softening, embroidery and printing specialists, and trim suppliers for labels, zippers, buttons, and packaging. This proximity means we can source, produce, and finish a complete garment without any component travelling more than 30 minutes.

03

Our Factory — Location and Capabilities

The factory houses CNC fabric cutting, industrial sewing lines, quality inspection stations, and a finishing area. We produce hoodies, sweatshirts, t-shirts, joggers, jackets, shirts, and outerwear — handling everything from pattern development and sampling through to bulk production and packing. Our team brings decades of combined experience in garment construction, with specialisations in heavyweight fleece, French terry, and technical outerwear.

04

The Skilled Workforce of Barcelos

Barcelos has something that money cannot replicate overnight: a deep pool of skilled garment workers. Many operators in the region have 20-30 years of experience in specific construction techniques — overlocking, coverstitching, taping, binding. Local vocational schools continue to train the next generation. This concentration of human capital is why global luxury brands have maintained production partnerships in Barcelos for decades, and why the region consistently delivers superior construction quality compared to newer manufacturing centres.

05

Getting to Barcelos

Barcelos is easily accessible for factory visits. Porto's Francisco Sá Carneiro International Airport (OPO) is just 45 minutes by car, with direct flights from most European capitals. Why is Barcelos important for textile manufacturing?

Barcelos has been Portugal's textile capital for over 100 years. The region concentrates 300+ textile companies — from yarn spinners to finished garment manufacturers — creating a complete ecosystem. This density of expertise means faster turnarounds, better quality control, and competitive pricing through supply chain efficiency.

What makes the Barcelos supply chain special?

Everything needed to produce a garment exists within a 30km radius: fabric knitting mills, dyehouses, finishing plants, embroidery specialists, and trim suppliers. This vertical integration means we don't depend on international shipping for components — reducing lead times and enabling rapid sampling.

How many people work in textiles in the Barcelos area?

The broader Barcelos-Braga-Guimarães textile triangle employs tens of thousands of workers in garment and textile production. Barcelos municipality alone has hundreds of registered textile companies, from small family workshops to large export-oriented factories.

Do luxury brands manufacture in Barcelos?

Yes. Several internationally recognised fashion and luxury brands maintain manufacturing partnerships with factories in the Barcelos region. The area's reputation for quality construction, particularly in knitwear and casual wear, has made it a preferred sourcing destination for premium European and international brands.
