Why Portugal

Why European brands choose Portugal for private label

Portugal's textile industry is one of the most technically capable in Europe. The northern region — Porto, Barcelos, Guimarães, Braga — has been producing garments for generations. The skilled workforce, the concentration of mills, and the density of specialist suppliers (embroiderers, label makers, finishing houses) means quality that is genuinely difficult to replicate elsewhere at comparable MOQs.

For European brands specifically, Portugal offers something no Asian manufacturer can: zero import duties, 2–5 day shipping, same-timezone communication, and EU sustainability standards as the baseline. The "Made in Portugal" label carries real weight with European consumers — it signals craftsmanship, sustainability, and traceability.

Premium streetwear brands, DTC labels, and luxury basics brands have been moving production to Portugal for exactly these reasons. The per-unit cost is higher than Asia — but total cost of ownership is often lower, and the brand story is significantly stronger.

FAQ

Common questions about private label manufacturing

What is private label clothing manufacturing?

Private label manufacturing means we produce garments built entirely to your specifications — your fabric choice, your fit, your construction details — and brand them with your labels, tags, and packaging. You own the product. It is different from white label (using our existing designs with your branding) and different from print-on-demand (decorating wholesale blank garments). Private label is the highest level of product ownership.

What is the difference between private label and white label?

Private label: you develop the product from scratch (or from reference samples). The garment is custom-constructed to your specs. Full creative and technical control. White label: we have a ready-developed product, you put your branding on it. Faster and cheaper, but less differentiation. We offer both. Most scaling brands start with white label and transition to private label as they grow.

What is the MOQ for private label manufacturing?

Our private label MOQ starts at 50 units per style per colour for hoodies and sweatshirts, and 75–100 units for t-shirts and other garments. This is among the lowest genuine private label MOQs available from a certified European manufacturer. For sample development, there is no minimum — we produce single units.

Do I need a tech pack for private label manufacturing?

A tech pack is ideal but not required to start. You can begin with reference garments, sketches, or detailed descriptions. We will work with you to develop specifications during the sampling process. If you do have a tech pack, it speeds up sampling and reduces the number of rounds needed. We can also help you create a tech pack as part of the development process.

Can you develop the product design for me?

Yes. Beyond pure manufacturing, we offer collection development as a service. We can develop patterns from scratch, advise on construction, suggest fabric combinations, and help you create a cohesive product line. Many of our clients arrive with a concept and leave with a full product specification — before a single unit is cut.

How does private label labelling and packaging work?

We source and attach your woven labels, hang tags, care labels, and size labels to your exact specifications. We can also handle custom packaging — polybags with your branding, custom boxes, tissue paper, stickers. Everything is supplied ready to sell. We require your label files and specifications before production begins.

How long does private label manufacturing take?

First production run: 10–14 weeks total (2–4 weeks sampling, 3–5 weeks production, 1–2 weeks for labels and packaging to be sourced). Reorders run faster — typically 5–7 weeks — because patterns and specs are established. We are honest about lead times and will not quote unrealistic timelines.

What certifications do your private label products carry?

All products manufactured by White Cotton carry our OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, which covers every fabric we use. For organic cotton products, we use GOTS-certified materials and can provide chain-of-custody documentation. BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) is also available. These certifications are yours to use in your brand's sustainability communications.

Can you match a competitor's product or a reference garment?

Yes. Send us any reference garment — competitor product, vintage piece, sample from another factory — and we will deconstruct the specifications: fabric weight, composition, construction, measurements. We will then sample to match or improve it. This is the most efficient way to start if you already know what product you want.

Why choose Portugal for private label manufacturing in Europe?

Portugal has the highest concentration of certified textile factories in Europe outside Italy, with generations of expertise in quality knitwear and casualwear. For European brands, the advantages are significant: no import duties, short shipping times (2–5 days), same-timezone communication, factory visits possible by day trip from most EU cities, and certifications that are recognised and respected by European consumers. Portugal is where premium European streetwear brands are choosing to manufacture.
