3D Puff Embroidery

3D puff embroidery places a layer of foam beneath the stitching to create a raised, three-dimensional effect. At White Cotton, we use high-density foam inserts and precise stitch tension to produce bold, tactile logos — the signature look of premium streetwear caps and hoodies.

How It Works

01

Artwork is digitised with higher stitch density and adjusted pathing to fully cover the foam — standard embroidery files will not work for puff.

02

Closed-cell foam (2–3 mm) is cut to shape or placed as a sheet over the embroidery area.

03

The garment is hooped and the machine stitches through the foam at high density, with satin stitch columns covering the foam edges cleanly.

04

Excess foam is torn away from around the stitched area — it breaks cleanly along the stitch lines.

05

Each piece is inspected for full foam coverage, consistent height, and clean edges.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • +Eye-catching raised effect that commands attention
  • +Premium tactile quality — customers notice the difference immediately
  • +Extremely durable — foam is permanently encased in thread
  • +Works beautifully on structured garments like caps and jackets
  • +Can be combined with flat embroidery for depth contrast

Cons

  • Not suited for fine detail or small text (minimum 5 mm letter height)
  • Slightly higher cost than flat embroidery due to foam and density requirements
  • Only works well with bold, simple shapes — thin lines and gradients are not possible
  • Foam adds slight stiffness to the decorated area

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

What is 3D puff embroidery?

3D puff embroidery is a technique where closed-cell foam is placed beneath the embroidery stitches to create a raised, three-dimensional effect. The thread covers the foam completely, producing a sculpted, tactile finish. It is most commonly seen on caps, hoodies, and streetwear pieces where bold branding is the goal.

Can 3D puff embroidery be combined with flat embroidery?

Absolutely — this is one of our most requested combinations. A brand logo in 3D puff with flat-embroidered text underneath creates a layered, premium look. The contrast between raised and flat elements adds visual depth and sophistication to the design.

What is the minimum text size for 3D puff?

Letters need to be at least 5 mm tall for the foam to be covered cleanly. For best results, we recommend 8 mm or larger. Very thin lines (under 1.5 mm wide) cannot hold foam — they should be done in flat embroidery and combined with the puff elements.

How thick is the puff effect?

Standard puff foam is 2 mm thick, which gives a noticeable but refined raise. For a more dramatic effect, we offer 3 mm foam. Multi-level puff — where different parts of the design use different foam thicknesses — is also possible for a sculpted, layered look.

Does 3D puff work on t-shirts?

Technically yes, but we generally advise against it. Lightweight jersey fabrics can pucker or distort under the high stitch density required for puff embroidery. The best results come on heavier fabrics — French Terry, fleece, canvas, and structured caps. If you want a raised effect on a t-shirt, we recommend DTF with a puff ink layer instead.
