Why Portugal

Why Portugal for outerwear manufacturing

Cold-weather production heritage

Northern Portugal has been producing heavyweight garments for generations. Our teams operate industrial walking-foot and compound-feed machines built for multi-layer outerwear — canvas over sherpa over interlining — without skipping stitches or puckering.

Full-category capability

Most factories specialise in one garment type. We produce jackets, coats, vests, and fleece layers under one roof. This lets you develop coordinated capsules — matching fleece mid-layer and canvas shell — with a single manufacturer.

Vertical lining integration

Lining sourcing, cutting, and attachment happen in our own facility. No outsourcing lining work to a sub-contractor who may use different quality standards. One factory, one quality gate.

Low MOQ for complex garments

Outerwear is expensive to produce. Most European manufacturers require 200–500 unit minimums for lined jackets. We start at 50 units per style and colour — viable for emerging brands testing their first AW collection.

EU compliance built in

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified fabrics, organic cotton (GOTS) available, and full EU workplace and environmental compliance. No import duties within Europe, no customs delays.

Speed to market

8–12 weeks from brief to delivered outerwear. Compare that to 16–24 weeks from Asian suppliers. Reorder mid-season if a style sells out, instead of waiting until next year.

Construction

Cold-weather construction details

Shell layer

Cotton canvas, twill, or wool-blend melton as the outer barrier. DWR or waxed finish available for rain resistance. Reinforced stitching at shoulders and elbows.

Insulation layer

Wind-blocking interlining sandwiched between shell and lining. Prevents cold air from passing through the fabric weave. Available in all outerwear above 350 GSM.

Lining layer

Sherpa, fleece, quilted cotton, or satin depending on warmth target. Full-body or partial configurations. Detachable snap-in option for three-season versatility.

Heat retention details

Ribbed knit cuffs and waistbands, drawcord hems, storm flaps over main zippers, interior chest pockets, and high collars with snap closures.

Hardware

YKK zippers (metal, coil, vislon), two-way zips for longer coats, metal snap buttons, rivets at stress points, D-rings, cord locks, and custom-engraved pulls.

Finishing

Garment washing, enzyme softening, DWR application, waxing, and stone washing. Each finish changes how the outerwear looks and performs — we swatch before committing.

Process

How outerwear production works

01

Category & Brief

Tell us what outerwear you need — jackets, coats, vests, or a full layering system. Send tech packs, reference images, or even rough sketches. We assess fabric weight, lining type, hardware requirements, and construction complexity. Detailed quote with line-by-line breakdown within 48 hours.

02

Fabric & Lining Selection

We source and swatch your shell fabric, lining, and interlining combinations. For outerwear, getting the drape-to-warmth ratio right matters — a canvas shell with sherpa lining behaves differently from twill with quilted cotton. We send physical swatches so you can feel the weight before committing.

03

Sample Development

First sample produced in 10–14 working days. Outerwear samples include all final hardware (zippers, snaps, pulls), lining, and construction details — not simplified versions. You review fit, warmth, mobility, and hardware function. Most brands approve in 1–2 rounds.

04

Pre-Production Confirmation

Before bulk cutting begins, you approve a pre-production sample built with your actual production fabric, hardware, trims, and labels. This is the reference garment every unit replicates. No surprises at delivery.

05

Bulk Production & QC

Full production in our Barcelos factory: cutting, multi-layer assembly, lining insertion, hardware installation, finishing, and decoration. Every outerwear piece is individually inspected for seam integrity, zipper function, lining alignment, symmetry, and hardware durability. 4–6 weeks for standard runs.

06

Packing & Shipping

Each piece is individually poly-bagged, hang-tagged, and boxed. EU delivery in 2–5 working days. We handle customs documentation and ship DDP worldwide. Tracking provided from factory door to your warehouse.

Layering

Outerwear layering systems

We help brands build modular outerwear capsules where each piece works independently and together. A three-layer system gives your customers versatility across temperature ranges — and gives your brand three SKUs from one design language.

Layer 1 — Base

Fleece Mid-Layer

Quarter-zip or full-zip brushed fleece. 260–360 GSM. Worn alone in mild weather or under a shell when temperatures drop.

Layer 2 — Insulation

Quilted Vest

Lightweight quilted gilet for core warmth without bulk. Snap-in compatible with the outer shell. Diamond or channel quilt options.

Layer 3 — Shell

Canvas Jacket

Cotton canvas or twill outer layer with DWR finish. Interior snap points for attaching the vest insert. Wind-blocking interlining.

FAQ

Outerwear manufacturing questions

What outerwear styles can you produce?

We manufacture the full outerwear spectrum: canvas chore coats, sherpa-lined trucker jackets, quilted vests, fleece layering pieces, varsity bombers, coach jackets, lined overshirts, and heavyweight cotton coats. Our production covers everything from lightweight unlined shells at 220 GSM to fully insulated cold-weather pieces at 580+ GSM total garment weight. If it goes over a t-shirt, we make it.

What lining options are available for outerwear?

We offer five lining categories: cotton sherpa (~400 GSM) for maximum warmth and texture, brushed fleece (260–360 GSM) for mid-weight insulation, quilted cotton for structured warmth with a clean interior, satin for lightweight bombers and varsity jackets, and self-lined options where the shell fabric doubles as the interior. Linings can be applied full-body, partial (yoke and sleeves only), hood-only, or as detachable inserts with snap-in systems.

Do you offer waterproofing or weather-resistant finishes?

We apply fluorine-free DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finishes to cotton canvas and twill outerwear. This treatment causes water to bead and roll off the surface, providing rain resistance for everyday wear. It is not a waterproof membrane — we specialise in natural fibre outerwear, not technical Gore-Tex-style construction. The DWR finish withstands approximately 15–20 washes. We also offer waxed cotton finishes for a heritage water-resistant look.

What is the warmest outerwear construction you offer?

Our warmest builds combine a 480 GSM cotton canvas shell with full-body 400 GSM cotton sherpa lining, wind-blocking interlining between layers, ribbed knit cuffs and waistband, a storm flap over the main zipper, and a drawcord hem. Total garment weight reaches 580+ GSM. For layering systems, we also produce matching fleece mid-layers designed to pair with our shell jackets for modular warmth.

Can you produce layering systems or coordinated outerwear capsules?

Yes. We help brands build three-layer outerwear systems: a base fleece mid-layer, a quilted vest, and an outer shell jacket — all designed to work together visually and functionally. We can engineer snap-in attachment points between layers, consistent collar heights for stacking, and shared colour palettes across pieces. This is popular with outdoor-adjacent streetwear brands running AW capsule drops.

What zipper and hardware brands do you use?

We use YKK zippers exclusively — metal, coil, and vislon — in all weight classes. Hardware includes brass, gunmetal, and matte black snap buttons, press studs, rivets, D-rings, adjustable side tabs, and cord locks. All metal hardware can be custom-plated to match your brand palette. We offer custom zipper pulls with laser-engraved or debossed logos. Two-way zippers are available for longer coats.

What shell fabrics work best for outerwear?

Our outerwear fabric library includes cotton canvas (220–480 GSM) for structured chore coats and workwear, cotton twill (220–340 GSM) for coach jackets and lighter bombers, wool-blend melton for overcoats and varsity bodies, brushed fleece (260–580 GSM) for zip-ups and layering, and washed organic cotton (500–680 GSM) for heavyweight designer pieces. All fabrics are available in OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified options, with organic cotton (GOTS) on request.

What is the MOQ and lead time for outerwear production?

Minimum order is 50 units per style and colour. Outerwear sampling takes 10–14 working days due to multi-layer construction, hardware, and lining work. Bulk production runs 4–6 weeks after sample approval. EU delivery adds 2–5 days. Total timeline from first contact to delivered goods is typically 8–12 weeks. For orders above 200 units, we can negotiate priority scheduling.
