What Makes a Great Polo Shirt
A polo shirt looks simple, but the difference between a cheap polo and one that people want to wear comes down to construction details. The collar needs to hold its shape — not curl, not sag, not lose its form after five washes. The placket needs to sit flat and crisp. The piqué fabric needs enough weight to drape properly without feeling stiff. These details are invisible when they are done right, and painfully obvious when they are not.
At White Cotton, every polo starts with the fabric. We source our piqué cotton from European mills, in weights from 180 GSM (lightweight, breathable, ideal for hospitality or summer) to 260 GSM (structured, substantial, ideal for premium retail and corporate). The piqué weave — that distinctive textured diamond or honeycomb pattern — is knitted into the fabric, not applied afterwards. This gives the polo its characteristic structure and breathability that plain jersey cannot match.
The collar is the signature of a polo. We produce ribbed-knit collars that are cut on the grain and attached with flat-lock seams. For brands that want a more formal look, we offer woven collars with added stiffness. Tipped collars — with a contrasting stripe on the edge — are knitted into the rib rather than sewn on, which means the tipping is permanent and will not fray or separate over time. We also produce mandarin/officer collar polos for a contemporary, collarless silhouette.
Embroidery is the natural partner for polo shirts. Unlike prints that can crack or peel on the textured piqué surface, embroidery sits on top of the fabric with a tactile, premium finish. Our Tajima multi-head machines stitch directly onto the finished garment — no transfers, no patches — producing clean, crisp logos that last the life of the polo. For corporate programmes, we handle individual employee name embroidery alongside the fixed company logo.
Every polo we produce is finished to European standards. Side vents, ribbed sleeve cuffs, reinforced shoulder seams, clean cover-stitch hems, and custom woven labels. We produce from XXS to 4XL in classic, modern, and slim fits. Whether you are building a retail polo range or outfitting a 500-person workforce, the construction quality is the same.

Polo Construction Details
Collar Construction
The collar is what defines a polo. We produce ribbed-knit collars that hold their shape wash after wash, with options for tipping, contrast under-collar, and reinforced collar stands. Each collar is cut on the grain and attached with a clean, flat-lock seam that sits comfortably against the neck. No floppy collars, no curling — engineered to stay put.
Piqué Fabric
Our piqué cotton is sourced from European mills in 180–260 GSM weights. The characteristic honeycomb texture is knitted in, not printed, giving the fabric its structure and breathability. We offer 100% cotton piqué, cotton-poly blends for durability, and stretch piqué with elastane. Every batch is tested for colour fastness, shrinkage, and pilling resistance before cutting.
Button Placket
We offer two-button, three-button, and concealed button plackets. The placket is reinforced with interlining for a clean, crisp front that does not warp. Button options include corozo (natural, matte), pearl (premium sheen), and resin (durable, cost-effective). Buttonholes are finished with dense bartack stitching for longevity. We also produce Johnny collar polos with an open V-neck — no placket, no buttons.
Embroidered Branding
Embroidery is the gold standard for polo branding. We digitise your logo and stitch it directly onto the garment using multi-head Tajima machines — up to 15 colours per design. Common placements are left chest, right sleeve, and back yoke. For corporate programmes, we add employee names or numbers alongside the fixed logo. The result is a tactile, premium finish that never cracks, peels, or fades.
Sleeve & Hem Finishing
Sleeves are finished with ribbed cuffs — matching or contrast-tipped to complement the collar. Side vents at the hem are standard on classic-fit polos, with a tennis tail (longer back hem) available on request. All seams are clean-finished with cover-stitch or flat-lock construction. Every detail is inspected before packing.
Fabric Options
Fabrics for Polo Shirts
While piqué cotton is the standard polo fabric — and where most of our polo production sits — we also produce polos in jersey, oxford knit, and blended performance fabrics. Below are fabrics from our library that work well for polo shirt construction.

Decoration Techniques for Polos
Embroidery is the most popular decoration for polo shirts — it is durable, premium, and works perfectly on the textured piqué surface. We also offer print options for larger designs where embroidery is not practical.

Uniform Solutions
Corporate Polo Programmes
Polo shirts are the most requested garment for corporate uniforms — professional enough for client-facing roles, comfortable enough for all-day wear, and easy to brand with an embroidered logo. We work with hospitality groups, retail chains, logistics companies, and tech firms across Europe to produce uniform polo programmes.
A corporate programme at White Cotton means consistent production over time. Once your initial sample is approved, we store your patterns, fabric specifications, thread colours, and label artwork so that every reorder is identical to the last. Colour matching is guaranteed across batches — we use Pantone references locked to each client account. Reorders typically ship in 3–4 weeks.
We handle the details that matter for uniforms: individual poly-bagging by size, custom packing lists, delivery scheduling aligned with staff intake dates, and optional employee name embroidery alongside the company logo. For larger programmes, we offer quarterly production schedules with pre-agreed pricing.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What is piqué fabric and why is it used for polo shirts?
Piqué is a textured cotton knit with a distinctive raised diamond or waffle-like pattern. It is the standard fabric for polo shirts because it is more structured than plain jersey, holds its shape through repeated washing, and has natural breathability. The texture gives polos their characteristic look and feel — substantial enough for corporate wear yet comfortable for casual and sport use. We offer piqué in 180–260 GSM weights, with 220 GSM being the most popular for premium polos.
Can you manufacture polos with tipped collars and contrast details?
Yes. Tipped collars — where the collar edge has a contrasting stripe — are one of our most requested polo details. We can produce single-stripe, double-stripe, and multi-colour tipping on both the collar and the sleeve cuffs. We also offer contrast plackets, interior collar taping in a second colour, and contrast under-collar finishes. All tipping is knitted into the rib, not sewn on, which ensures durability and a clean finish.
What embroidery options are available for polo shirts?
We offer flat embroidery and 3D puff embroidery on polos. The most common placement is left chest (8–10 cm wide), but we also embroider on sleeves, back yoke, and collar stands. Our Tajima multi-head machines handle up to 15 thread colours per design. For corporate programmes, we can embroider individual names or employee numbers alongside a fixed logo. Embroidery is the preferred decoration for polos because it is durable, premium-looking, and does not crack or peel like print.
Do you offer corporate uniform and workwear polo programmes?
Yes. Corporate uniform programmes are a core part of our polo production. We handle repeat orders for hospitality, retail, logistics, and office environments. This includes consistent colour matching across reorders, embroidered logos with employee personalisation, individual poly-bagging by size, and delivery scheduling aligned with staff intake dates. Once the initial sample is approved, reorders can be turned around in 3–4 weeks.
What polo collar and placket styles do you offer?
We manufacture three main collar constructions: the classic ribbed-knit collar (self-fabric rib, most common), the woven collar (stiffer, more formal), and the officer/mandarin collar (collarless stand). For plackets, options include the standard two-button placket, three-button placket, concealed/hidden button placket, and Johnny collar (open V-neck with no buttons). Placket reinforcements and button quality are customised per order — we use corozo, pearl, and matte resin buttons.
What is the minimum order quantity for custom polo shirts?
Our minimum order quantity for custom polos is 50 units per style and colour. This includes your choice of fabric weight, collar and placket construction, decoration, and custom labelling. For first orders, we recommend starting with one or two colourways to test fit and fabric hand before scaling. Sampling takes 1–2 weeks, with full production at 4–6 weeks from sample approval.
What sizing options are available for polo shirts?
We manufacture polos from XXS to 4XL. Every order starts with a size-set sample so you can verify fit across the full range before bulk production. We offer three fit profiles: classic (relaxed through the body), modern (slightly tapered with shorter sleeves), and slim (close-fitting). We can also work from your existing size specs or grade a new pattern based on your target measurements and a reference garment.
Can you produce performance or sport polos alongside cotton piqué?
Yes. In addition to 100% cotton piqué, we produce polos in cotton-polyester blends (CVC 60/40 or TC 65/35) for increased durability and reduced shrinkage, and in moisture-wicking polyester piqué for sport and activewear. Blended fabrics are popular for corporate uniforms because they hold colour better over industrial laundering. We also offer stretch piqué with 3–5% elastane for a modern, athletic fit.
