What Custom Clothing Manufacturing Means
Custom clothing manufacturing means every garment is made from scratch to your design. Unlike blank decoration — where a pre-made garment gets a logo printed on it — custom manufacturing starts with your concept and ends with a garment that exists nowhere else. The fabric, the cut, the construction, the fit, the labels — everything is yours.
At White Cotton, custom manufacturing begins when you share your idea. It can be a detailed tech pack with every measurement specified, a hand-drawn sketch on paper, a mood board with reference images, or even a written description of what you want. Our pattern-making team takes your input and develops a full technical specification, selects appropriate fabrics, and produces a physical sample for your approval.
This is how serious brands build their products. When you manufacture custom clothing in Portugal, you get EU-certified production, OEKO-TEX tested fabrics, skilled craftsmanship from one of Europe's oldest textile regions, and the ability to create garments that are genuinely unique to your brand. No other brand will have the same product because it was designed by you and made exclusively for you.
Portugal is particularly well-suited for custom manufacturing because the infrastructure supports small and medium runs. Unlike factories in Asia that require thousands of units, we work from 50 units per style — making it accessible for independent brands, emerging designers, and established labels testing new concepts. You get the quality and capability of a full-scale manufacturer with the flexibility of a small workshop.

From Sketch to Finished Garment
How Custom Manufacturing Works
Share Your Design
Send us your tech pack, sketches, reference images, or even a written description. Our team reviews your concept and comes back with questions, fabric suggestions, and a preliminary cost estimate — all within 48 hours.
Pattern Making & Development
Our pattern makers translate your design into a full technical specification. We select fabrics, define construction details, create the pattern, and prepare everything for sampling. If you started from a sketch, this is where it becomes a real garment blueprint.
Sampling & Iteration
We produce a physical sample and ship it to you for review. You evaluate fit, fabric hand-feel, colour accuracy, and construction quality. Tell us what to adjust — we revise and produce a second sample until every detail is right.
Bulk Production & Delivery
Once the sample is approved, full production begins. We handle cutting, sewing, finishing, quality control, custom labelling, and packaging. You receive regular updates and your finished goods are shipped directly to your warehouse or fulfilment centre.
Location Advantages
Why Portugal for Custom Clothes?
Portugal's northern textile region — centred around Porto, Barcelos, and Guimaraes — has been producing clothing for over 200 years. The infrastructure for custom manufacturing is unmatched in Western Europe: skilled pattern makers, experienced seamstresses, fabric mills, trim suppliers, and finishing specialists are all within a 30-kilometre radius of our factory. This concentration means faster development, better communication between production stages, and higher quality control.
For brands creating custom clothing, Portugal offers a critical advantage: low minimum order quantities. Most Asian factories require 500–1,000 units minimum, making it impossible for independent brands to create truly custom garments. In Portugal, you can manufacture 50 units of a completely bespoke design — same quality, same processes, same machinery. This makes Portugal the go-to destination for emerging brands, limited-edition collections, and designers testing new concepts.
EU production means OEKO-TEX certified fabrics, GOTS-certified organic cotton options, full regulatory compliance, and complete traceability from raw material to finished garment. Your custom clothes carry a "Made in Portugal" label that communicates quality and ethical production to your end customers. No customs delays or import duties for European delivery, and shipping times measured in days rather than weeks.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a tech pack to get started?
No. While a tech pack speeds things up, it is not required. Many of our clients start with hand-drawn sketches, mood boards, or reference photos of existing garments. Our pattern-making team will translate your vision into a full technical specification, including measurements, construction details, and fabric recommendations. We develop the tech pack for you as part of the sampling process.
Can you work from sketches or rough ideas?
Absolutely. We regularly work with designers who send us pencil sketches, digital illustrations, or even photos of garments they want to reinterpret. Our team reviews your concept, suggests fabrics and construction methods, and produces a detailed spec sheet before cutting the first sample. The more detail you provide, the closer the first sample will be — but even a basic sketch is enough to begin.
How many sample rounds are included?
We include two rounds of sampling in every project. The first sample is produced from your design brief, and you review fit, fabric, colour, and construction. We then make adjustments based on your feedback and produce a revised sample. Most clients approve on the second round. Additional rounds are available at a reduced cost if needed — we iterate until the garment matches your vision exactly.
What if I don't have a design yet?
We can help. If you have a general idea — for example, 'an oversized hoodie in heavyweight French terry with a specific wash' — our design support team can develop the concept with you. We provide fabric swatches, suggest construction details, recommend decoration techniques, and guide you through sizing. You do not need to be a designer to create custom clothing with us.
Can you do custom sizing and grading?
Yes. We offer fully custom size grading for every project. Whether you need standard EU sizing (XS–3XL), US sizing, or a completely bespoke size chart tailored to your target market, our pattern makers will grade your design across all requested sizes. We also accommodate extended and inclusive size ranges. Each size is individually graded — not simply scaled up or down — to ensure proper fit across the full range.
Do you offer custom labels, tags, and packaging?
Yes — full private-label manufacturing is our speciality. We produce custom woven labels, printed care labels, hang tags, branded packaging (polybags, tissue paper, boxes), and any other branding elements you require. Everything ships under your brand name. We handle label sourcing and application as part of the production process, so your garments arrive completely retail-ready.
What is the minimum order quantity for custom clothing?
Our minimum order quantity is 50 units per style and colour. This applies to fully custom cut-and-sew production — not blanks or pre-made garments with added decoration. For a first order, we recommend starting with one or two styles to validate fit and quality. Once you are happy with the product, you can scale up to larger quantities with volume pricing.
How long does the full custom manufacturing process take?
From initial contact to delivery, the typical timeline is 6–8 weeks. This includes 1–2 weeks for pattern making and first sample, 1 week for revisions and approval, and 4–5 weeks for production, finishing, and shipping. Rush timelines may be available depending on factory capacity. We recommend planning 10–12 weeks ahead for seasonal collections to account for any design iterations.
