Why Portugal for Textile Manufacturing?
Portugal is one of the oldest and most respected textile manufacturing nations in Europe. The industry dates back over two centuries, with the northern regions of Porto, Braga, and Barcelos forming one of the continent's densest textile clusters. Within a 30-kilometre radius of our factory, you will find spinning mills, knitting and weaving facilities, dyeing houses, and finishing plants — the entire supply chain, tightly integrated and refined over generations.
The Portuguese textile industry accounts for over 10% of the country's total exports and employs more than 130,000 workers. This is not a cottage industry — it is a modern, vertically integrated manufacturing ecosystem producing for some of the world's most demanding brands. The workforce is highly skilled in both traditional techniques and modern production methods, from computerised knitting machines to automated cutting systems.
Manufacturing textiles in Portugal means operating under the full framework of EU quality, safety, and environmental standards. Every fabric we use carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, independently verified free of harmful substances. We also work with GOTS-certified organic cotton and BCI materials for brands with the highest sustainability requirements. EU workplace regulations ensure fair labour conditions and full traceability throughout the production chain.
For European brands, proximity is a decisive advantage. There are no 30-day shipping voyages, no customs delays, and no import duties within the EU. Sampling turnaround is measured in days, not weeks. If an issue arises, you can fly to Porto and be at our factory within hours. This proximity also enables smaller production runs that would be impractical with distant suppliers — you can test a new fabric or style with 50 units before committing to larger volumes.
Pricing in Portugal is competitive within Western Europe. While not the cheapest globally, our rates are 20-40% below France, Italy, or the UK, with comparable or better quality. When you factor in shipping costs, customs complications, lead time risks, and the hidden costs of quality failures with distant suppliers, Portuguese textile manufacturing is often the most economical choice for brands serving European markets.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What types of fabrics can you produce?
We work with both knit and woven fabrics across a wide range of weights — from lightweight 100 GSM jersey to heavy 1100 GSM sherpa fleece. Our fabric library includes French terry, fleece, sweatshirt fleece, waffle knit, piqué, ribbed knit, corduroy, denim, twill, flannel, sherpa, and more. We source from trusted European mills and can accommodate custom fabric requests for specific compositions, weights, or finishes.
What certifications does your textile factory hold?
We hold OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, which means every fabric in our supply chain has been independently tested and verified free of harmful substances. We also work with GOTS-certified organic cotton and BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) materials. Our factory operates under full EU workplace and environmental regulations. We can provide complete traceability documentation — from fibre origin to finished garment — for every order.
What is the difference between knit and woven fabrics?
Knit fabrics are made by interlocking loops of yarn, giving them natural stretch and flexibility. Examples include jersey, French terry, fleece, ribbed knit, and piqué — used in t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, and activewear. Woven fabrics are made by interlacing two sets of yarns at right angles, producing a more structured, stable material with less stretch. Examples include twill, denim, flannel, poplin, and corduroy — used in shirts, outerwear, and pants. We manufacture garments in both knit and woven fabrics.
Do you offer dyeing and fabric finishing services?
Yes. We offer garment dyeing, piece dyeing, and enzyme washes to achieve a wide variety of colours and finishes. Our dyeing partners in the Barcelos textile cluster can match Pantone references with high accuracy. We also provide finishing treatments such as enzyme wash, stone wash, softener treatment, brushing, and peaching. All dyeing processes comply with OEKO-TEX standards and EU environmental regulations for wastewater treatment.
How do you ensure fabric quality and consistency?
Every fabric lot we receive is inspected for weight (GSM), shrinkage, colour fastness, pilling resistance, and dimensional stability before it enters production. We perform wash tests on every new fabric to verify that the finished garment meets our standards after laundering. For repeat orders, we keep fabric reference samples to ensure batch-to-batch consistency. We can share full fabric test reports with clients on request.
Why is Barcelos a centre for textile manufacturing?
Barcelos and the broader Minho region in northern Portugal have been at the heart of European textile production for over two centuries. The area is home to one of the densest concentrations of textile mills, dyeing houses, and garment factories on the continent. This cluster effect means that every stage of the supply chain — spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing, cutting, sewing, finishing — is within a short drive. It reduces lead times, improves quality control, and keeps costs competitive compared to scattered supply chains.
What is the minimum order quantity for textile production?
Our minimum order quantity is 50 units per style and colour. This applies across all garment types — hoodies, t-shirts, sweatshirts, shirts, outerwear, and pants. The 50-unit MOQ is among the lowest offered by any factory in Portugal, making us a strong fit for emerging brands, small-batch collections, and brands testing new products before scaling. Volume discounts apply for orders above 200 units.
Can you source sustainable and organic textiles?
Yes. We source GOTS-certified organic cotton, BCI cotton, recycled polyester, and other sustainable materials. We can produce garments with organic and recycled content certified to international standards, and provide the documentation your brand needs for sustainability claims. Our fabric partners in Portugal are investing heavily in sustainable fibres and low-impact dyeing processes, so the range of eco-friendly options is growing each season.
