Ethics in Production
What Makes Clothing Manufacturing Ethical?
Ethical clothing manufacturing means producing garments under conditions that respect workers, protect the environment, and provide full transparency to the brands ordering the product. It is not a marketing label — it is a verifiable set of practices covering wages, working conditions, chemical safety, environmental impact, and supply chain traceability. The difference between ethical and conventional manufacturing is accountability: can the brand prove, with documentation, that every person involved in making their garments was treated fairly and every material used was safe?
At the core of ethical production is fair labor. In Portugal, garment workers are protected by EU employment law — one of the strictest labor frameworks in the world. This means legally enforced minimum wages (currently among the highest in the European garment sector), a maximum 40-hour work week with mandatory overtime pay, 22 days of paid annual leave, full social security and healthcare coverage, and workplace safety inspections by independent government authorities. These are not voluntary guidelines — they are law, and violations carry real penalties.
Chemical safety is the second pillar. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification means every fabric has been independently tested for over 100 harmful substances — heavy metals, formaldehyde, pesticide residues, banned azo dyes, and allergenic disperse dyes. White Cotton sources OEKO-TEX certified fabrics as standard. For brands needing organic materials, the GOTS-certified fabrics we source guarantee that cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides and processed without toxic chemicals from field to finished fabric.
Supply chain transparency is what ties it together. Ethical manufacturing without documentation is just a claim. At White Cotton, every production order is traceable: we can tell you which mill wove the fabric, which lot number it came from, who cut it, which sewing line assembled it, and who inspected the finished garment. For brands building sustainability reports, B-Corp applications, or consumer-facing transparency pages, this documentation is available on request for every order.
Portugal has become one of the most attractive destinations for ethical clothing production in Europe. The northern textile corridor — Barcelos, Guimaraes, Famalicao, and Porto — combines decades of garment manufacturing expertise with the full EU regulatory framework. Unlike offshore alternatives where ethical compliance depends on brand-funded audits and voluntary codes of conduct, manufacturing in Portugal means compliance is built into the legal system. White Cotton sits at the heart of this corridor, offering brands a production partner where ethical practices are not an add-on — they are how we operate every day.

From Sourcing to Delivery
How Ethical Production Works
Ethical Fabric Sourcing
We source from OEKO-TEX and GOTS-certified European mills with verified supply chains. Every fabric lot comes with origin certificates, composition reports, and chemical safety test results. Organic cotton is traceable from farm to fabric through GOTS transaction certificates.
Transparent Quotation & Sampling
Within 48 hours you receive a detailed quotation with full cost transparency — fabric, trims, labor, finishing, and margin. No hidden costs, no middlemen. We produce a physical sample in our Barcelos factory so you can verify quality, fit, and construction before committing.
Fair-Wage, In-House Production
Every garment is cut, sewn, and finished in our own factory by full-time employees earning fair wages under EU labor law. No subcontracting, no outsourcing. Inline quality checks run throughout production. You know exactly who is making your clothes and under what conditions.
Traceability, QC & Delivery
Every garment passes 15+ quality checkpoints before packing. On request, we provide a production traceability sheet documenting every stage — fabric lot, cutting date, sewing line, QC inspector, and pack date. Your goods ship with full documentation for your own ethical sourcing records.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What certifications does White Cotton hold for ethical manufacturing?
White Cotton sources OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified fabrics, which guarantees every fabric we use has been tested for harmful substances and is safe for direct skin contact. We also source GOTS-certified organic fabrics, meaning the fabric supply chain — from raw cotton farming to finished fabric — meets strict environmental and social criteria. Our factory operates under full EU regulatory compliance, including REACH chemical standards and CE product safety requirements.
How do you ensure fair labor practices in your factory?
As a Portuguese manufacturer operating under EU law, every worker at White Cotton is protected by some of the strongest labor regulations in the world. This includes legally mandated minimum wages (significantly above global garment industry averages), maximum 40-hour work weeks with paid overtime, mandatory paid holidays and sick leave, social security contributions, and safe working conditions enforced by Portuguese labour inspectors. We do not use subcontractors for sewing — all production happens in-house in Barcelos, so we have full visibility over every worker involved in your order.
Can I audit your supply chain and visit the factory?
We welcome full transparency. Factory visits are available for production clients — once your samples are approved and bulk production is underway, you can visit our Barcelos facility, meet the team, and see your garments being made. We also provide supply chain documentation on request, including fabric mill certificates, OEKO-TEX test reports, and GOTS transaction certificates for organic orders. Third-party audits (BSCI, SMETA, or custom) can be arranged at the client's cost.
Where do you source your fabrics and how do you verify ethical sourcing?
We source fabrics primarily from certified European mills in Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Turkey. Our organic cotton comes from GOTS-certified supply chains with full traceability from farm to fabric. Recycled materials are GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certified. We maintain long-term relationships with our mills and visit them regularly. Every fabric lot we receive comes with a certificate of origin and composition, and OEKO-TEX fabrics include independent lab test reports confirming they are free from harmful chemicals.
How does manufacturing in Portugal compare to Asia on ethical standards?
Portugal operates under the full EU regulatory framework, which is one of the strictest in the world for worker protection and environmental standards. This means legally enforced minimum wages (not voluntary codes of conduct), independent government labor inspectors (not factory-funded audits), strict chemical regulations (REACH), and environmental discharge limits on textile wastewater. In contrast, many Asian garment-producing countries rely on voluntary brand-imposed codes of conduct with limited enforcement. Manufacturing in Portugal eliminates the ethical risk inherent in long, opaque supply chains.
Do you publish sustainability or ethical impact reports?
We provide project-level transparency rather than annual corporate reports. For each production order, we can supply: fabric origin and certification documents, a production traceability sheet showing every stage from cutting to packing, energy and water usage estimates per garment (on request), and waste and offcut recycling data from our cutting room. For brands that need this information for their own sustainability reporting or B-Corp applications, we compile it into a format your team can use directly.
What is your policy on waste and environmental impact?
Our cutting room operates a zero-landfill policy for fabric waste. Cutting offcuts are sorted by composition and sent to certified textile recyclers who convert them into recycled yarn or insulation material. Thread waste and packaging materials are recycled through municipal industrial recycling. We use water-based inks for screen printing where possible, and our dyeing partners operate closed-loop water treatment systems. We are continuously investing in reducing our environmental footprint per garment produced.
What is the minimum order quantity for ethical production?
Our minimum order quantity is 50 units per style and colour — the same for ethical and conventional production. There is no premium or upcharge for ethical manufacturing because EU-compliant, fair-wage production is our standard operating model, not an add-on. Every garment we produce, regardless of order size, is made under the same ethical conditions in our Barcelos factory.
